The new official portrait of His Majesty King Frederik X and Her Majesty Queen Mary that was released in the week leading up to his accession to the throne of Denmark.
As the world wakes up this Sunday morning, January 14, 2024 – for the first time in more than 70 years – no Queen Regnant is currently reigning anywhere in the world.
This morning, Her Majesty Margrethe II of Denmark, on the 52nd anniversary of her accession to the throne of Denmark abdicated in favor of her son, now His Majesty King Frederik X of Denmark. He will now serve as Head of State of Denmark, reigning alongside the new Queen Consort, Her Majesty Queen Mary of Denmark, a native Australian who married her prince almost 20 years ago after they met in a pub in Sydney.
Her Majesty on her way to Christiansborg Palace to sign her papers of abdication passes a banner of thanks with a modified version of her royal monogram.
The handover occurred at a cabinet meeting at Christiansborg Palace in the capital Copenhagen, when Queen Margrethe signed a declaration of her abdication, officially transferring the crown to Frederik.
Unlike in the United Kingdom where last year we saw the formal installation of His Majesty King Charles III in an opulent Coronation ceremony, Denmark has not held a coronation for a monarch since the introduction of their Constitution in 1849. Instead, the new King and Queen will step out onto the balcony of the palace, joined by Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen who will publicly proclaim the King’s accession.
The final official portrait of Her Majesty Margrethe II released ahead of her abdication today.
Her Majesty shocked her nation on New Years Day when in her annual address she announced she would step down as Head of State, citing the health challenges she has faced recently including significant back surgery last year. She will now be known as Her Majesty Queen Margrethe instead of Her Majesty The Queen.
As Denmark looks to the future under their new King, they also look to the next generation, the 18-year-old Prince Christian, the new Crown Prince of Denmark.
To quote the former Queen’s final words to her nation after signing her abdication, “God Save the King.”
