The Coin of the Realm

The Royal Mint today released the first official coin to feature the new profile of HM The King. The Latin inscription surrounding the portrait reads: “• CHARLES III • D • G • REX • F • D • 5 POUNDS • 2022,” which translates “King Charles III, by the Grace of God, Defender of the Faith.” These first coins are commemorative and feature a tribute to Her Late Majesty Queen Elizabeth II on the reverse.

The King is facing left on the coin, which upholds the tradition of each successive monarch facing the opposite way. The only exception to this was Edward VIII who felt his left side profile was better than his right and well, we know how that turned out. George VI picked up the tradition in proper fashion facing left and that is why HM Queen Elizabeth II faced right. The King will also uphold the tradition of male monarch's not being featured wearing a crown or diadem. #ProtcolMatters#GodSaveTheKing#CaroleanEra
